He has struggled since the beginning. Early on in the book Huck treats Jim poorly by pulling a cruel joke on him. When he realizes what he has done, Huck decides to do apologize to Jim. Apologizing to Jim means seeing him as someone of more importance than a slave, something people thought was completely horrible. “It was fifteen minutes before I could work myself up to go and humble myself to a nigger…” It takes Huck fifteen minutes to apologize to Jim because he was black. If Jim was white then he would never have pulled the joke on him or taken that long to apologize because they were always viewed as someone equal or greater due to age. He realizes that Jim has feelings.
Huck completely expresses how he feels about Jim being black, he sees the only difference is his color of skin. “ I knowed he was white inside…” By recognizing Jim is the same shows how meaningful the epiphany was, and what it meant to Huck.
