Testing was present, but not like it is today. Due to this, the writing will focus on high-stakes testing since The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. Historically, testing has gone from just a normal thing in schools, to being the assessment that judges student achievement and teacher progress. The federal government has traditionally had the power to affect what the topic looks like. According to Au (2009), “With the passage of the No Child Left Behind Act (Unites States Congress, 2002), or NCLB, the United States ushered in the era of federally mandated high-stakes, standardized testing” (p.65). They track the test and the achievement with the results. Overtime, this topic has not changed much. It went from being mandated by the No Child Left Behind Act to the Every Student Succeeds Act. The federal government is affecting the topic by mandating the high-stakes test. High-stakes testing is not just a topic for education in the United States. The testing has a history worldwide.
