At the high school level a teaching degree or certificate is often required. At the college level a graduate degree is often mandatory in a sports management related field. To become a high school athletic director it is often a requirement that the candidate has been the head coach of some type of high school sport (often with it being a football team). Having a college degree definitely helped however, it wasn’t a necessity when he took the job. This would change over the years. Degrees are now required and he has had to get many certifications. On top of his college degree, he had to get his teacher certification updated every few years. He taught drivers education in addition to being a football coach. Working with students gave him the knowledge to run a team successfully. He worked as a head coach for 10 years until the athletic director position became available.
