Hemp, when in plastic form, is still completely biodegradable. When plastic is dumped into landfills, it leeches a toxin known as ‘Leachate’, which is created when water runs past the slowly decomposing plastics and collects the oil that it was made from. With hemp as plastic, it would breakdown faster and leave no trace of such poisonous toxins. There is also a problem with the amount of rubbish located within our ocean. Your question may be why we aren’t using this already, which is a completely valid question. The answer lies in the authoritative power, the governments. Big oil companies don’t want to lose all of their profits, so they fight to keep themselves running. The governments also want their profit from the oil companies using their land, so it’s a win win situation. If hemp was used, the big oil companies wouldn’t have as much of a demand for oil, so their income wouldn’t be as much as before. If they go out of pocket, the government who owns the land doesn’t get any money from the oil company, meaning they loose what could be vital for them. Drilling for oil also damages the earth, not just because of the possibility of damaging the marine life in a spill, but also the rock below which has lain untouched for ages.
