Community Case Studies

This case study of my community has been extremely interesting for me to research. I was confident that I was aware of the health of my community. I did not think that I would discover too many differences between my Walk About and my discoveries from my research. I was unsure if my informants from my Site Visit would have much to add to my research. Since, I was only aware of my informants at The Salvation Army providing clothes to my community. Now that I have completed my Walk About, my research, and my Site Visit I am more informed about my community’s health. As well as aware that there is some information that I was not totally accurate about. For instance, I thought my community’s health was fair, but 84% of people in my community rate their health as good or very good. I thought my community had high rates of obesity and diabetes, but both are low in my community. This is also interesting because on my Walk About I discovered many food restaurants, which are not the best food choices. I was assuming from seeing all these different restaurants that obesity and diabetes would be a concern in my community. The 84% may have rated their health as good or very good because they have been active. I was aware that The Salvation Army helps homeless people in various ways. Such as with their soup kitchen and providing clothes. Poverty in my community does not only come in the form of homeless people. There are people that have homes, but live below the poverty levels. Chelsea’s poverty levels are lower than other parts of Manhattan. My informants at The Salvation Army brought more awareness to me on the hunger problem within Manhattan. As well as issues with making end meet each month. My research rates Chelsea’s poverty level at 13%, while Manhattan’s is
