Our lives today have become significantly reliant on technology. Whether it is at home or at work, people today are increasingly finding themselves in front of a screen. A recent survey in fact found that individuals spend about 8 hours daily in front of a screen (Tardanico, 2012). That is almost a third of the day and half of the day if one assumes that a person sleeps eight hours a day. With people spending so much time using technology, it is only advertent that the question is raised: do people now spend less time with others? Social media supporters might disagree. In specific, technology has reduced the need of people to form intimate relationships for sexual purposes. This has arisen mainly due to the large amounts of pornography that is available on the internet. Research has found that people tend to be introduced to pornography through online browsing at ages as young as 13 to 14 year-olds. Arterburn (2013) argues that when people watch pornography they essentially “neuter” themselves. Pornography encourage people to relieve themselves on a daily basis and as people indulge in this act they essentially become addicted to it. As people get addicted to pornography, they search for more specific interests. The adaptation of people to watching pornography, however, can be quite harmful. This can foster people to have unusual expectations about how women should look and behave like. When real women do not act in a manner similar to how women acted in the pornographic video, men tend to become disinterested in real women. For instance, it is proposed that shy people or people who tend to have social anxiety can use internet without any issues as internet usually does not result in social anxiety. People with social anxiety can definitely benefit from socializing from the internet. For these people, it might seem that internet is not making them alone. However, the problem is that even people with social anxiety eventually end up alone because of continued technology usage. A research conducted by Rauch et al. (2014), for instance, found that when socially anxious people were asked to interact publicly after a long period of interacting on social media. they faced greater social anxiety than before. Moreover, when they were asked to meet people they already knew significantly on social media, they still faced significant social anxiety .the results are problematic because they imply that social anxiety people are only likely to suffer from social media use and their problems are likely to get worse.
