United Nations Children’s Fund: Improving Health Conditions in Haiti After Hurricane Matthew On October 4, 2016, Hurricane Matthew struck Haiti as a Category 4 hurricane. Haiti is a country extremely susceptible to natural disasters, and Hurricane Matthew only added to its list. Roughly, there has a two percent decrease in Haiti’s GDP every year from 1975 to 2012 as a result of the damages from natural disasters. Hurricane Matthew slaughtered approximately five hundred and fifty people. Semi-permanent school shelters were put up, Haiti’s roads and bridges were restored to life, children were fed, and sanitation systems were implemented. Even still, the damages accumulated from over the years and brought on by Hurricane Matthew were extensive. As reported on April 7, 2017, there are 41,421 suspected cases of cholera, 1.4 million people in need of WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) assistance, and 12,000 children in vulnerable situations. China is extremely worried about the state of the Haitian people and hope that their country will be able to bounce back after its many disasters. With such a large population, the People’s Republic of China understands some of the crises Haiti is facing. China is one of the most populous countries in the world, and we have experienced problems in our rural areas with poor sanitation and water supply. In China, we have attempted to combat this problem with efficiency measures that are cost effective. We also believe in changing the latrine to prevent against diseases.
