I had a fairly basic process for picking the book Guns, Germs and Steel. I mainly decided to read it based on how it was highly recommended for AP world history. It also seemed very interesting, as it proposed a question that I have never thought about very well. I was debating over this book and Girl With a Pearl Earring, but I decided that if I really wanted to read it, I could read the latter for my own leisure whenever I wished, but this book had to be read before the next school year began, as it was strongly recommended to me. Those are essentially all the reasons I had to choose this book. I expect to learn the answer to the question of why different areas of the world developed in such different ways, at different speeds, and at different times. The author Jared Diamond was born on September 10th, 1937 in Boston, Massachusetts,during World War II. He had multiple varying interest during highschool and College. The way that he presented it, with a backstory as to why he has researched and worked on the question, made me more curious. He also made it very clear that a response given by the average person would be wrong, as things like racism have influenced the way that many think. I was surprised to learn that there were many early human species. There were homo erectus, which had a few physical traits different from the modern day human. I was also surprised when Diamond mentioned that New Guineans were likely smarter than modern Europeans. This is due to the advancements and innovations that they have created for themselves.
