“When his aunt Clara died, Lennie just come along with me out workin’. Got kinda used to each other after a little while.” (Steinbeck, 40) This highlights the start of George and Lennie’s true friendship. Although Steinbeck does not reveal how long they have been together but with the surrounding information it proves to show that they have been together for a while. The next way that shows how George and Lennie have each other no matter what is when George shot Lennie at the end of the novel. “And George raised the gun and steadied it, and he brought the muzzle of it close to the back of Lennie’s head. The hand shook violently, but his face set and his hand steadied. He pulled the trigger.” (Steinbeck, 106) This shows how true their friendship is. It might be a bit controversial at first but a true friend will kill their friend if other people are out to get him. George killed Lennie because he was gonna get killed anyway so he decided to kill him ahead.
In conclusion, George and Lennie’s true friendship shows throughout the novel with all the things and problems that occur. George is there for Lennie all the time at cost of nothing.
