Female Characters In Video Games Essay

Video game popularity is rising each year. But with all the popularity people are noticing how few of games portray a leading female role. Even if a female character has a leading role, almost all of the females are portrayed with fantasy body types to draw in a crowd. These women characters deserve to have a chance to entertain gamers just like any other male character, but it doesn’t have to be where their body is drastically overhauled to look fake. These things degrade females not only in the game, but it can have an affect on what happens outside the game. Male characters are often depicted as strong, lead role characters, which has resulted in women characters being depicted as weak, busty characters with no real purpose to a game. Equality is something women have had since around 1919. It might not have been “perfect” when it happened, but over time women have gained the same rights as men. Looking through the majority of video game you can see that characters like Mario, Link, or Ash were male characters. Janis and Martis (2007) stated, “Overall, 64% of the games featured male characters, against 17% female” (p.143). Why won’t developers create more female lead characters? Create a game that portrays a woman in a more natural way. Give her the gun and let her save the males or save the whole world. Women can be just as aggressive and invincible as a male lead role can. Taking away the busty boobs and tight waists will create a more realistic characters (gamers love realistic graphics). Taking away all the negative aspects of women in video games can lead to a game that receives high praise and reception. This praise will not be for how the game is, but because for once the developer has taken the initiative to create a lead female role who looks like normal
