What is gender inequality? Gender inequality is defined as the disparity in status, power and prestige between people who identify as women and men (Laura). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, women made up 50.8% of the population in 2010. Also in 2010, women became half of all workers in the U.S. (Laura) But still this doesn’t change anything in our society and that is why gender inequality still persists in US. Gender inequality is seen as one of the causes which has been blocking the development of countries all across the globe. It is one major problem which gives rise to many problems. One nice way in which gender inequality can be checked is through the pay gap. Pay gap in terms of gender wage gap is defined as the gap in wages between men and women. However, when we analyze the work environment we find that this equality actually is not visible in certain areas. One area is obviously the pay difference between men and women. Women have to fulfill many unique functions like giving birth, caring for the child and looking after the family, however, the system generally does not recognize these unique requirements and over a period of time the women find they lose out vis a vis men. This is not the only reason, occupational difference and race and ethnicity further contribute towards widening the pay gap. This perhaps explains how gender inequality is affecting women not only in United States but also across the wold. The need for gender equality is highlighted in a quote by Kofi Annan, former Sectary General of the United Nations “Gender Inequality is more than in itself. It is a precondition for meeting the challenge of reducing power, promoting sustainable development and building good governance.” Gender equality will hence pave the way to a balanced society where women have equal contribution in a nation’s
