Frederick Douglas faced difficult life situations growing up as a slave, and having to learn to read on his own. Though Douglas had a desire to read and write he was not allowed to do so. Douglas overcame this situation by having people help him and finding ways to learn with the material and sources around him. Douglas aspire went beyond wanting to learn and write another difficulty he face a long with many other slaves was wanting freedom. Douglas learning and writing skills came into handy when he became a free man he used his skills in life and became a civil rights activist and anti- slavery lecturer. I have also conquered situations in life that has made me into the young woman I am today. In middle school I realized I had a fear of public speaking, I could talk to my friends and family just fine, but when I was in front of a crowd I would tense up, forget my words sweat really badly and my hands would twitch. I would be embarrassed to have to stand in front of a classroom or a group of people to talk. I think that most kids around my age would have been embarrassed to speak if they had the same phobia as I did. The way I got over this phobia is interacting with more people and speaking to people small groups at a time and also practicing how I was going to deliver a speech before presenting it. Now that I’ve come over the fear of public speaking I’m more comfortable speaking in front of people for things like job interviews and classroom
