Whatever experience I lack playing the flute, I make up for with other leadership skills. I have been playing flute for two years and I am capable enough to assist others. I will not be afraid to ask for help from the more talented and experienced players. I will listen, accept criticism, and know when to accept that my ideas are not always best.
I have had 2 wonderful seasons in the Emerald Brigade, and I hope to continue the tradition of pride and excellence. Marching band means a lot to me and I want to make sure other people have as wonderful of an experience as I have had. I’ve always looked up to the people in leadership and know I hope to be that person for someone else. My enthusiasm is contagious and will inspire other musicians to strive to be better players. I will work my hardest to make this season a great one. Thank you for considering me as the next flute section

Something that makes a leader is seen in all of us. Leadership skills don’t only consist on how courageous or strong you are. Being a leader is more about your commitment, passion, and trustworthiness. Leaders have been seen all over the era of slavery by many slave abolitionists that have put their mind to something and changed America as we know it. People like Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, and President Lincoln have all took the liberty of trying to make America a better place and after many hardships we have finally achieved a goal.…

My heart is beating quickly, my mouth is dry, and as I look at the familiar faces in front of me, their judging eyes make them seem like strangers. I struggle to get them to quiet down and we begin our hour long sectional, which I have to lead. It was the first day of my third year in marching band and at the end of last year, with the graduation of the previous section leader, I was granted his important position. Being a competitive person, I was extremely self conscience of how my section made me look. I hated being blamed for their errors and was exceedingly harsh towards them during sectionals.…

I now had the title of section leader in the band, and was also an upperclassmen of the football team. It wasn’t exactly as easy as it seemed from those of the past. The sophomores thought they knew everything just because they had been there one year before, and the freshman thought they were hot shit for making it through middle school. It was painful to witness the underclassmen of football only squat halfway down, or the underclassmen of band march out of time, and have your advice go in one ear and right out the other. I decided that I needed some type of legitimacy as a leader.…

If one ranks leaders on how well they led by example, surely one of our greatest leaders is none less than the 26th U.S. president, Theodore Roosevelt. “Do as I say, not as I do” is a philosophy that many leaders take, however, this builds bitter resentment in the eyes of the people. The best leaders have always been ones who lead by example, showing their followers how its done, both speaking of ideals and showing them. Theodore Roosevelt led by example by working against big businesses that oppressed consumers, working for the betterment of himself, and fighting for what he believed in.…
