1. Feliway is a synthetic analogue of the F3 fraction of the feline facial familiarisation pheromone, administered as a spray or as a plug-in diffuser (Bowen & Heath, 2005). Pheromones are detected by the vomeronasal organ, binding to pheromone-binding proteins in the olfactory tract, altering affective state via limbic system stimulation (Landsberg et al., 2013). Feliway diffusers provide reassurance to cats in stressful situations and decrease stress-related behaviours such as inappropriate urination and scratching (Bowen & Heath, 2005). Sprays can be administered near soiled or scratched areas, associating them with ‘friendly’ scents and deterring undesirable behaviours (Feliway.com, 2015).
2. There are no known drug or supplemental interactions with Feliway, so it can be safely used in conjunction with other behavioural therapies if necessary, and there are no medical contraindications for use (Landsberg at al., 2005). Although Feliway can alleviate tension between cats, it is contraindicated in cases of severe aggression, as well as when other undesirable behaviours are not stress-related (Feliway.com, 2015).
3. Feliway’s official website list the following health and safety considerations:
*Feliway has no effect on non-feline species, although diffused solution may affect the respiratory systems of caged birds, and …show more content…
Fluoxetine is an anti-depressant Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI) drug, which selectively inhibits the reuptake of serotonin by blocking the serotonin reuptake pump on presynaptic neuronal membranes (Drugbank.ca, 2013b). The effects of this are elevated mood and decreased anxiety due to increased availability of serotonin, a neurotransmitter involved in mood regulation, occurring due to neuronal function modifications caused by altered protein synthesis (Overall, 2013). Serotonin-increasing drugs have demonstrable usefulness in reducing obsessive-compulsive behaviours such as acral lick dermatitis (Beaver,
