Obviously, hot dogs are no exception. An endless amount of pigs are cycled in and out of gestation and farrowing crates to give birth and feed their young until their bodies can no longer handle it. The cages are so small that most mother pigs are unable to make nests for their children, and end up staying completely still for most of their lives. The rest are sent off to be raised in severely crowded pens and given only the attention and care they require to survive. The pigs who are unable to grow up healthy at a sufficient rate are killed and thrown away, meanwhile, those who manage to survive the horrible endeavor are shipped off into crowded trucks and sent on their way to the slaughterhouse.…

One way we are shown in this extract that the pigs are in control would be through the revelation that the pigs have been educating themselves in private, without the other animals knowing about it. The pigs “now revealed that during the past three months they had taught themselves to read and write” and the other animals were not part of this education, which suggests the pigs had control over how much they wanted the other animals to know and, if the pigs didn’t want the other animals to learn things or even know what the pigs were up to behind closed doors, the pigs wouldn’t allow that to happen. This is as a result of the intelligence that the pigs have due to teaching themselves from “an old spelling book which had belonged to Mr. Jones’s children and which had been thrown on the rubbish heap” that the other animals didn’t have access to. The fact the pigs ‘revealed’ this to the animals suggests that they knew it was unjust to prevent the other animals from having access to the same information as them and so they wanted to keep it a secret for as long as possible so that they could have enough knowledge to take control of the animals. This prevented the animals from being able to stop the pigs from taking control because they were not at the same level of intelligence to do so.…
