The Fear of Death
Necrophobia is the fear of dying, which 68% of the U.S. population have this phobia. (National Institute) There are many reasons people deeply fear death, when we die, we disappear. Most religious view have people fearing that when we die, we will be punished for our sins. (Margaret Paul) “It is never too soon to befriend this mysterious, unpredictable life experience that we will all undergo.” (Erin Coriell) Many types of literature have been influenced with the idea of death such as Chaucer’s “The Pardoner’s Tale” and Poe’s “The Masque of the Red Death.”
The Pardoner’s Tale
People are dying of the Bubonic plague, said to be sent from god to punish sinners. After the plague, 3 rioters live very sinful lives of drinking and partying. Blood was its Avatar and its seal--the redness and the horror of blood.” The Masque of the Red Death follows Prince Prospero’s attempts to avoid the Bubonic plague. The prince then throws a masquerade ball with seven rooms of his abbey. The story has a lot of symbolism for death such as the seven colored rooms of the prince’s abbey. The color of the seven rooms, black and red, represent death. The clock, that is located in the black room, is also a symbol for death.
I may not think of death all the time, but moments of deep thought occur when I do think of death. I’ve never been very religious and do not fear being punished for my sins. My fear is the thought of not existing anymore and being forgotten. I want to do something before I die to prove my place in the world and to make it a better place when I do pass.
