Essay On Evidence Based Practice

When nurses use evidence-based practice when caring for a patient, it allows the patient to receive the best quality care that they need. Every procedure that a nurse does should be based off evidence-based practice. At the facility that I am currently working at, it is easy to find resources about evidence based practice. However, one thing that obstructs the facility ability to implement evidence-based practice is that the facility has two educators that work with our department but they are both per diem and are not there often. The education department at the facility that I work tends to forget the emergency room because we do have the two educators. There are multiple ways that a nurse can look up and utilize evidence-based practice in our everyday tasks. One way that the facility that I work at does is through a system called Health Stream. It is how the facility keeps the staff up to date on all the new policies and procedures and all the new information about diseases. It is a place where a nurse can take online classes to further his or her knowledge. There is also a website that the hospital pays for a subscription to that is called UpToDate. Both of the nurses that are in the education role are bachelor prepared nurses, being a master’s prepared nurse may bring a different perspective to the group. Many nurses in the health care field have an associate’s degree. When a student is in the nursing degree program the student does not usually learn a lot about research or evidence-based practice (Miller, Ward, & Young, 2010, p. 75). By having my master’s degree and increased knowledge of evidence-based practice and research, I could help education those nurses that are not familiar with those two concepts. By educating the nurses it might promote them to use evidence-based practice in his or her
