Even though a candidate has won the popular vote it still does not mean they have won. It’s the electoral votes which decide who has won the election. To win the candidate must get at least 270 votes. The electoral college is a group of electors which the American citizen choose themselves. Each state has several electors depending on the population of the state. When we as Americans are casting our votes for the presidential candidates, we are casting our votes for electors, who will cast their votes for the candidates. When a candidate wins the election in a state he or she gets all the state's votes. It is uncommon but there are chances that a candidate might have popular vote but lose by the electoral college votes.
