People who are trusted with the senior's care are usually the ones who victimize them. Caregivers abuse the senior by isolating them from their friends and family, they demean them, terrorize and intimidate the person by screaming or threatening to do something bad to them. Most seniors who go through this are left feeling hopeless and feeling as they have nowhere else to go.
A very common form of abuse in the elderly is verbal abuse. There are many caregivers who yell, criticize and intimidate seniors. These caregivers say harsh words to manipulate the senior into doing what they want. Seniors who are being verbally abused often show a change in their behavior. You may notice the individual withdrawn, arguing with individuals they normally get along with, you might even notice the senior is now mumbling and talking to themselves.
What should you do if you suspect elderly abuse is taking place? First of all, do not ignore your first instance. You could try talking to the senior to find out what is taking place. Most importantly, if the senior is talking and trying to tell you something, listen. Report the abuse to the person in charge if the senior is in a nursing home or assisted living. If the abuse is happening at the home of a close friend or loved one, you are still obligated to report your suspicions to the state
