Sometimes, nursing home staff will take steps to hid abuse or neglect if they know when residents’ family members will be visiting. This may include their cleaning living areas, administering appropriate medications and medical treatments, and helping them to bathe and dress in clean clothing. If people visit on different days and at different times, however, then the staff will not know when to expect them. Consequently, they may be less likely to abuse, or otherwise mistreat, a resident. It is also helpful if people visit their loved ones often at their nursing homes.

People in nursing homes often require specific treatments and care. As family members, it may be helpful to have an understanding of their conditions and needs. Additionally, it is advisable for people to stay involved in their loved ones’ medical monitoring, and decision making process with regards to their health care.
