By 1611 80% of the 500 settlers who came to Jamestown were dead. The arrival of the settlers started in May 1607 with only 110 Englishmen. Founded in 1607 Jamestown, Virginia was the first English colony to survive long lasting settlement, in what later became the United States. Many people today still wonder why so many people died so fast. Colonists died in early Jamestown because of three problems. These problems were, starvation, natural causes, and illness. One reason people in early Jamestown died was starvation. Jamestown had no farmers therefore they had no one to makes crops or kill animals for food (Doc c). Such as water poisoning they were getting from the lack of clean water they had at the settlement, this gave water poison to the settlers(Doc a). Harsh weather from the different seasons brought sickness to the people (Doc e). The drastic changes in the water level were very harmful to the people. When the water level went down there was an extreme drought which caused death from a loss of drinking water (Doc b). Natural causes played a major role in the death of settlers in early Jamestown. The last major reason early Jamestown people died is illnesses. The Jamestown settlers only had one surgeon/ doctor. This was harmful because when people got an injury it might be a long time before someone can help you (Doc c). They also didn't have enough druggists to make medicine for the sick settlers, this created deaths from diseases that could have easily been prevented (Doc c). They also had no people to help take care of people after an illness, there were no nurses or caretakers in their group of settlers (Doc c). Not having the right people to take care of the ill hurt the settlers very
