Since the first settlers came here from England, cigarettes and tobacco has been a part of the American culture. Back then, the feeble government and economy was greatly dependent on the product, but now, while it does still bring in money, it’s a major health risk and overall danger to the U.S and the populous who live in it because of very dire and controversial reasons. The U.S should no longer sell cigarettes and make them illegal because it would decrease the annual death toll, it would over all make the population healthier, and it would bring profit to safer alternatives.
The first argument is that it would reduce the annual death toll. According to the National Cancer Institute estimations, “smoking alone is directly responsible for at least one-third of all cancer deaths in the United States. In addition to cancer, smoking has been shown to be a major cause of heart disease, bronchitis, emphysema, and stoke. Sally Satel, a psychiatrist and resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, suggests that e-cigarettes could benefit the American public by helping millions of people stop smoking, saving an estimated half million lives every year. They also have brought the U.S 1.5 billion dollars so far. According to her, e-cigarettes show encouraging promise in reducing smoking rates all over the country and could lead to significant health care savings and other costs. Personally, a person who smokes can save a fortune too. If on average, a pack of cigarettes costs six dollars, and they buy two packs a day, that’s eighty-four dollars a week, and roughly 2,300 dollars a month. Take that times 12, and you get a lot of money that can be spent on more important or necessary things, like bills, collage loans, or even towards a vacation or family
