25 percent of on duty fatalities for fire fighters every year are caused by emergency vehicle accidents. In 2009 according to the National Fire Protection Association, there where approximately 1,000 fire fighters that were injured in vehicle accidents. The vehicles involved where either fire department apparatus or personal vehicles while responding to or returning to the station from an emergency incident. This shows that there is a need for drivers to be properly trained in how to operate an apparatus or personal vehicle in emergency driving situations. A comprehensive drivers training program is need to reach the upmost safest drivers. This drivers training programs has been developed for use of by any department small, large, full time, or volunteer. The objective is to help reach the ultimate goal and help to bring all firefighters home without any incident.
The development of this Driver Training Program has been done to assure that all drivers of (Said department) have been given the proper training as well as, they have been certified to drive the fire apparatus. The DTBO in addition to the Department Chief will assign qualified trainers to be on the driver’s training board. At a minimum of Two to Three trainers along with the DTBO and the Chief will make up board. All board members must be qualified on all the departments’ apparatus as well, as state certified trainers. Only those who are board members are qualified to take and certify department members on department apparatus.
