This is Not Just a Discourse Community, it’s My Life. Throughout our life time, we have all been apart of a discourse community before, whether it has to do with a specific sports team that we participate in, or an online community like Facebook, twitter, and Instagram. John Swales definition of a discourse community is simply a distinctive group with descriptive characteristics. The discourse community I ended up choosing was my own, which is my soccer life. A soccer community can be defined in so many ways: from the process of learning the skill to play, to advance with a team, to win tournaments, and to watch and learn from professionals on television or social media. Like Swales’ third characteristic says, “A discourse community uses its participatory mechanisms primarily to provide information and feedback,” (221). Comparing this with a soccer community, essentially a player has to come to the meetings, practices, and the games. Sometimes a player may be injured and not able to play or practice, but to show that the player is still involved within the team, he or she would at least have to participate by showing up to the practice and watching from the bench or come to the game and sit next to the coach on the bench watching his or her teammates perform. Also, if a teammate carelessly does not show up to practices, he or she would not be able to play in the next game or so. To a coach, showing up to a practice is extremely important; it determines whether or not you have full participation going on with your team. You have to be fully involved and show determination to be able to keep improving and becoming a better person within your
