Communication with social media possesses powerful advantages and disadvantages for today’s organizations. The case study emphasizes the risks associated when communicating on social media, in particular the use of Twitter among college athletes. Social media has no geographical boundaries or predefined rules and regulations. Those who use social media are sharing their thoughts for the world to analyze instantly, with the inability to correct or edit ones thoughts after posting content. The risks of having the capability to speak one’s mind instantly to millions of people, poses a threat to those who are not consciously aware of who and how the message will be decoded.
College athletes tweeting racial or discriminatory statements caused athletic programs to monitor, and some cases, ban college athletes from using social media. The recent political movements in the Middle East were from global communities using social media to collaborate and provide feedback on the current state of leadership. As a result, social media has facilitated revolutions in countries such as Egypt, Libya, Syria, and China. Recognizing the power and benefits of social media, one should also understand the disadvantages.
An obvious disadvantage is the lack of personal interaction. It is especially challenging to achieve understanding and collaborate on getting work done when communication is taking place on social media (Robbins, Decenzo, & Coulter, 2015). To date there is nothing better than communicating with someone face to face. Personal interaction provides body language and other visual cues to gain immediate feedback. Communicating in a virtual environment makes reading the body language and environmental indications
