Most people who go out to eat are spending their hard earned cash and expect to receive the best dining experience in town so the typical "What do you guys want?" probably won 't land you a fat tip or a nice Yelp review in today 's serving industry. As a server, the goal is to make your restaurant stand out by giving your guest a memorable experience that 's going to keep them coming back for many more years. Also the guest you serve pay your bills so you have even more of a reason to build that connection. In order to keep them coming back you want to give them the full dining experience through three staged courses which include appetizers and drinks, dinner and dessert. You want to stray away from the typical phrases such as "Hey what 's up?" Or "What can I get you to drink?" Starting a greet with either one of these statements will kill your tip and the chance of your guest ever returning. Instead, start off by telling them your name and asking if it 's their first dining out at whatever restaurant you work at. A majority of the time your guest are going to respond yes but if this does happen to be their first time you want to offer your ultimate weapon which is menu knowledge. Inform them about any seasonal items or even happy hour specials if it 's that time. Now that you’ve informed your guest about the menu it 's time to wow them by selling some of your best non-alcoholic or alcoholic beverages. "Can I get you a coke?" Isn 't going to wow your guest. You want to sell them that margarita by describing it as refreshing, fruity or even strong for some. Making another suggestion shows that you aren 't just there to stand around and take orders but to show that you care about their needs. Once new drinks are brought to the table remind your guest about any dinner specials occurring and always suggest three of your favorite entrée 's because they want to know what 's good and what 's not. When describing a dinner entrée, the same formula when suggesting appetizers should be used. Use words such as savory when describing a steak topped with a caramelized onion sauce or juicy when suggesting a burger. When dinner is ready to be served be sure to always serve children first because they are always the hungriest followed by women and men. The main part of the entrée should always be placed in front of your guest because people always eat with their eyes first. They also didn’t pay fifty dollars for a steak just to have the mashed potatoes and veggies face them. They want that juicy steak placed in front of them so they can immediately dig in. After all food is placed ask if everything looks delicious and always ask about the temperature of steak or fish if ordered.
