Genocide in Darfur The genocide in Darfur, Sudan began in 2003 when two rebel groups began to fight. The government started a military operation or campaign of Genocide, and paired with an Arab militia called Janjaweed. Now, they continue to kill, terrorize, and burn non-arab villages. Their overall goal is to start a Pan-Arab state, which includes the countries of North Africa and West Asia. Sudan became independent from Great Britain in 1956. For the remainder of the 20th century, Sudan was engaged in two civil wars. In addition to this, there were also limited resources available which caused even more competition. (In a similar manner, one of the main factors of the Holocaust was hunger, and difficulties after the war.) Soon, oil was discovered in West Sudan, which was bound to cause more conflict. There are African and Arab people in Darfur, but the people are mostly Muslim. African farmers and others in Darfur are being murdered at the hands of the Janjaweed, a government-supported militia recruited from local Arab tribes. The genocide is being carried out by a government group, reminiscent of the crime commited by the Nazi’s. The genocide in Darfur has claimed 400,000 lives and displaced over 2,500,000 people. More than one hundred people continue to die each day; five thousand die every month. Government neglect has left people throughout Sudan poor and voiceless and has caused conflict throughout the country. In February 2003, two rebel groups launched an uprising against the government. The government responded by attacking the innocent civilians of Darfur. “Since February 2003, the government have used rape, displacement, organized starvation, threats against aid workers and mass murder.
