At the beginning of his sentence, Daniel is overcome with grief and despair as he tries to not only come to terms with what he has done, but also the painful situation he has left his family in as a consequence of his actions. During his visit on Daniel’s birthday, Tom notes; "I watched Daniel talk. His face was getting a bit of a concentration camp look to it and the dark circles under his eyes were worse than I remembered, yet today he did seem calm." Although the reference to ‘concentration camp look’ emphasises Daniel’s pain, the conjunction ‘yet’ emphasises that there is some mental change happening within Daniel. In conjunction to this, it demonstrates how Daniel has become calmer and is now able to gradually move on from the pain of his actions and look for ways to deal with his situation. In comparison to this, Tom at this point of his journey is still finding it difficult to come to terms with the situation he is in now; “exhausted, numb and wondering how our family, the Brennans, had ended up here.” The use of the listing of his negative feelings in conjunction to the negative connotation of the noun ‘here’, illustrates how in comparison to Daniel, Tom is still recollecting on the better times of his past and consequently he is still finding it difficult to accept his
