Essay On Cyrano De Bergerac

In the final scene of the play, Cyrano De Bergerac, by Edmund Rostand, Cyrano comforts the people around him, Roxane and Le Bret, by reassuring them about their worries of his death. Cyrano first comforts Roxane when she accuses herself of being the source of Cyrano’s romantic pain. When Roxane finishes, Cyrano responds, “No Roxane, quite the contrary. Feminine sweetness was unknown to me. My mother made it clear that I wasn’t pleasant to look at. ... Later, I dreaded the thought of seeing mockery in the eyes of a mistress. Thanks to you, I’ve had at least a woman friendship, a gracious presence to soften the harsh loneliness of my life” (221). To console Le Bret he says, “I’ll be sent to find my paradise [in Heaven]. More than one soul that I love must be exiled there. I’ll be with Socrates Galileo…” (221). Cyrano convinces Le Bret not to be mournful because although his death is unfortunate, it is not terrible tragedy. Cyrano reassures Le Bret that he is happy and excited to see what the afterlife is like. He describes the afterlife as paradise filled with people that he admires and looks up to, such as Socrates and Galileo. Cyrano uses his knowledge of his friendship with Le Bret to make his last words meaningful as he knows what Le Bret wants to hear. He comforts Le Bret by reassuring him that he will be with his two favorite role models. Le Bret is consoled by this because he now knows that his best friend won’t be alone in the afterlife and because Cyrano has accepted his death. He wanted his best friend to not worry and know he is okay with dying. In his last breathes, Cyrano manages to not only console his grieving friends, but also to reassure them that his death is not there fault or a huge mistake.
