Cuzco School Art Analysis

A term often used earlier in our art class was “Cuzco School,” but do we really know and understand what this term really means? In this paper we are going to find out exactly what Cuzco school really is, and we will also learn where the term originated, what it actually means, and by the end of this paper you should be able to go to any museum and identify any possible Cuzco School work. However for the interest of this paper, I will primarily be focusing on Cuzco paintings that revolve around depictions of the Holy Family, because Cuzco is an extremely broad form of art. Let’s begin with the basics, “Cuzco school is a group of European and indigenous painters that where from Cuzco, Peru”(Cuzco School). Cuzco school art works was made between, …show more content…
Vivero” (has the number 1 next to it). This painting shows the holy family together, and like most Cuzco School paintings it has the earth colors like, green, red and has a lot of gold used on the robes the family is wearing. This painting also shows a great deal of nature in the background, now some speculate that this was a way of documenting the types of vegetation and flowers that grown in that area, but I fell that I might be just as simple as adding beautiful detail to a work of art. This idea I think will be more obvious in the second painting. Another thing about this first painting is the detail of the faces and the sky really are not there, but yet you still find this painting interesting and detailed with out have super detailed faces with a mountain or forest in the background. Now the second painting is “Saint Joseph and the Christ Child, late 17th-18th century, oil on canvas, artist is unknown,” this painting is very different because the only two people present are joseph and Christ, usually its Mary and Christ. However if you compare this painting to the first one you will notice several things, one a lot more gold is being used, this could mean the painter was more famous and had more money to spend on materials. Another thing is the faces and

The medium used is the same as Wtewael version of The Adoration of the Shepherds. One of the main differences that is noticeable is that Grecos piece has the newly developed style of “Chiaroscuro” which was heavily used during the Baroque period mainly by Caravaggio. Greko uses angels in his pieces and has removed all animals that contain powerful iconography. The Ox is nowhere to be seen, the sheep is nowhere to seen and there is no dog. Wtewael has a style that of which is exaggerated colors and exaggerated physique of the body where the characters look godly.…

The Madonna and child in Tomme’s painting have tanner skin and darker hair. The Madonna and child in Bouts’ painting have more fair skin and reddish hair. This makes me remember that everyone in these times didn’t have a means of transportation, let alone travel so their depictions of religious figures had to be similar to their native people. In Tomme’s painting everyone has halos including the saints. He painted them in a whiteish transparent hue with gold patterns.…

Although currently the background is not decorative, originally this painting was the largest ever painted by Rembrandt. Through viewing a sketch for the original work, there initially was a large room behind the table before it was cut down and the use of sculpting light would have been necessary to bring the characters out of the depths of this space. Also, the figures are painted in much broader brushstrokes than his earlier paintings and many claim this is regarding the barbaric origins and actions of the narrative. The focus should not be on the people, but on the bravery and power represented in the crossed swords. Finally, this painting uses many deep red colors, invoking images of warfare and blood that are certain to proceed after the oath.…

Extraordinary details, external exactness and idealistic structure… still figures in Jan van Eyck’s work absolutely lack emotional development. Pursuing perfection in details (in pretty much everything, including human faces, fabrics, etc.) he makes the figures “locked into one place”, not giving any room for change. There is also a lot of evident symbolism in Jan van Eyck’s work, which is not so easy to spot in Rogier van der Weyden’s painting. Both of the works were painted using the “glazed oil” (layering and building on top of glazes) technique, which was Jan van Eyck’s primary medium.…

This painting has only a few hues, making it have a restricted palette. Leonardo da Vinci in this particular painting uses greens and browns for the landscape, and uses reds for the clothes of the women. With Leonardo da Vinci’s limited color palette for most of his paintings, brings more attention to the objects of his painting. Chiaroscuro is the shadow cast by a figure that is darker than the shadowed surface itself (Adams, 2003). In this project for example, I spent a great deal of time creating the t-shirt to be worn while I collected trash, collecting the trash itself, and creating the composition for the painting on Photoshop. Overall, if I had the chance to redo this final project, I would make my preparation fast and start painting as quickly as possible so time would be left over to allow the painting to dry. I would recommend for any future student who is assigned this project to plan time for the project carefully by creating a schedule of how the project will be performed and follow it…

I was required to personally hang my paintings professionally in a gallery in order to graduate. In order to do this, I had to follow a strict formula, so that they would be at eye-level for my viewers. Though this seemed frustrating at the time, I realize that learning how to hang my own artwork in a gallery professionally was an extremely valuable asset. After I had hung my paintings, and the reception for the show was held, I ended up being the one who sold the most paintings—seven out of the nine total. The show was successful and so was my body of work.…

One of the facts that can be observe is that all individuals have a "gold-leaf halo" in their heads, which could represent the holiness of all, except from the tax collector who is not religious (13).
