Essay On Cultural Diversity In America

America has been widely known as a melting pot of different races, cultures, religions, and ethnicities for some time now. Many would say that we are the most diverse nation in the world, and while that may be true to an extent,we still have a long way to go before we can be a truly culturally diverse country. True cultural diversity, to me, means that as a nation, we should be accepting of all human beings regardless of racial, ethnic, or religious background, gender, sexual orientation, age etc.. I personally believe that we will never be able to reach true cultural diversity because of the naturally hateful and intolerant nature that we as humans can exhibit. I personally have had some prejudices towards others based on sexual orientation. The reason for this being that I was raised in a strict Christian household where I was taught that homosexuality was sinful, and should be looked down on. This is not to say that all Christians are spiteful towards homosexuals, I was just conditioned to think that being homosexual was bad. I had never met an openly homosexual person until I started a job where my manager was gay. As I became more aware of homosexuality through different types of media, I began to learn about the struggles that they face in America as a minority group, and how many of them are decent human beings that are trying to make their own way in life. Although I still personally believe that homosexuality is wrong, it does not prevent me from accepting a homosexual person as they are. I do believe that I have been able to move past my prejudices towards homosexuals.
