I have chosen the eye popping, heart racing show, Criminal Minds. One comparison between Hollywood and the textbook is that in the textbook you have trials, parole, courts and we encounter crime more direct as victims. In Hollywood you will have the defendant saying they did commit one crime but not the other, when both crimes happened at the same time.
I interviewed one of my husband’s friends from the Marine Corps, Charles Harris a retired Forensic Technician Corporal. Charles was a Police Officer in South Carolina for 17 years.

After talking with Officer Harris it became quite clear that in actuality police work is flooded with incredible heartbreak and sadness that creates a huge strain on their personal life. In Criminal Minds they appear to live the life of a criminal justice superstar. In reality in cases such as Officer Harris they see things that they can never forget and struggle with PTSD throughout their lives, taking the things that they saw to their graves. Not all of it is heartbreaking, there is definitely an upside to police work. Officer Harris seemed to take great joy in the times that he could make a positive impact on somebody’s life who may have been going down the wrong path. To him that made all the sacrifices worth it. The textbook outlines true events that have happened, the textbook says that there is no single criminal justice system in the United States.
