The primary focus of this talk was whether the school system of today hurt the creativity in children. He started the talk about the uncertainty of the future and how the school system is supposed to prepare children for it. Ken Robinson believes creativity is as important as literacy and also believes that children are inherently creative and inventive. Whether everyone is truly creative or not as children is not certain to me, but I believe in my experience that it is true.

I believe that he is right about creativity and how we lack the risk taking nature we used to have as a child. I believe that as we go through life we have a negative influence beaten into our heads, about how stupid or wrong our ideas or the things we like are. As I stated earlier as I was summarizing his speech, I was once more assertive, creative, and social. Now, however, I have been forged into something I wish I wasn’t. I believe that the school system had a part to play in this. I was outspoken, then was discouraged from being so by teachers and peers, which then turned to negative self-talk. I was assertive, but in school assertiveness was discouraged by my teachers and seen as disrespect. When I look back on how I used to be I see a more creative, but in school that was also discouraged and seen as being “wrong” if I did some math problem or other activity in a different way, but yet yielding the same result. I believe that yet the school system need a revamp, but the way of doing so is beyond me at this point. In an ideal world we could have a curriculum that was personalized to each student’s needs and wants, but if such a thing is possible I doubt it will be in my life time. To sum up my thoughts on the topic, we need as a society find a balance between creativity and practicality. Without creativity we will never progress, but without specific and practical methods of achieving a results in certain situations we will also not
