Creatine was discovered in 1832 by Michel Chevreul. It is formed from the amino acids arginine, glycine, and methionine. Athletes take creatine supplements to improve strength and power. Athletes normally purchase creatine in powder, capsule, and liquid forms. The average adult gets 1 to 2 grams of creatine from his or her normal diet; for athletic performance, people may start with 10 to 30 grams of creatine a day and follow by a maintenance dose of 2 to 5 grams of creatine a day. (David Kiefer, 2014) The amount of results from using Creatine supplements may differ based on age, fitness level, diet, and athletic activity. The performance benefits of creatine are associated with specific types of muscular activity; researchers have found that creatine works best to improve performance in activities that involve high intensity movements. This evidence can be supported using information found on WebMd in which Dr. Kiefer article which suggests the results can be seen in athletes who sprint or weightlift. In addition, the Mayo Foundation for Medical education suggest that most studies lack support for creatine in improving performance in trained cyclists and that creatine may offer benefit to rowers for endurance and speed. (Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research, n.d.) However, the evidence that creatine boosts stamina or performance in aerobic activity is varied based on the athlete. Since using Creatine supplement causes water retention, creatine could slow down some athletes. (David Kiefer, 2014) Futhermore, Creatine enhances the quality of resistance training in activities using external resistance and improves overall strength and power. When performing short duration high intensity exercise, the majority of energy comes from the adenosine triphosphate (ATP) - phosphocreatine (PCr) system. PCr helps to increase the rate of rephosphorylation of ADP to ATP through the use of the creatine kinase reaction (1,2,3,4,5).
