My first goal for this semester in the Internship class was to increase my confidence using confrontation and silence in counseling sessions. My initial plans were to utilize a self-rating system and obtain feedback through supervision. These plans did not work out as I had planned because the opportunities to use silence and confrontation were hindered as I saw mostly intakes this semester. I did take the opportunity to use the confrontation and silence when it was presented but I did not have enough for the rating system idea. In place of the idea I researched techniques and uses of confrontation and silence from beginning clinicians to practical uses within group settings or in different modalities.
One of the articles I researched discussed adding silence to stories, using mindfulness as a part of cognitive behavioral therapy. The article discusses the benefits of silence and skills that can be used associated with the silence. The article presented further research opportunities in learning more about dialectical behavior therapy, mindfulness based cognitive therapy, and acceptance and commitment therapy. One article I found interesting was how confrontation and silence can be useful as an instructor or educator. Confrontation can lead to insight and awareness but, more often than not, students see this as an attack on their character or make it difficult for them to learn confrontation skills for their future. Understanding how to use confrontation and silence without conveying an attack on the client or on the student will both help me personally and professionally as a counselor, an instructor, and as a person in general. Continually looking for supervision, reading up on the latest ideas and practicing these skills each day will be my goal going forward to be the best clinician I can
