Are concussions a problem in football? According to the Mayo Clinic, “A concussion is a traumatic brain injury that alters the way your brain functions.” These happen much too often in the sport of football. There are many ways to tell if someone has a concussion through the symptoms that they show. There are also many effective ways of treatment if noticed so that future concussions for that person do not happen. Concussions have many ways of happening and there are also many ways to lower the risk of concussion. From youth teams to professional some concussions are dealt with correctly, but many are not. There are many ways that concussions can happen. You can get a concussion from a car crash, falling and hitting your head, getting hit by an object to the head and a big problem today getting a concussion in football. According to Falotico on page one of the article, Heading Off Trouble, “In the 2007-2008 school year, American High School athletes suffered an estimated 137,000 concussions. Football caused more than 70000.” The big hits in football are when most people think concussions happen. while some may many do not. Many concussions are repetitive blows to the head that build up to be a concussion these often get overlooked. Without the big hit many people wouldn't think to check for concussions, even trained professionals. Concussions can happen even if you are playing and tackling the right way and you just end up with a concussion. There are many ways in place to protect concussions but many more need to be there. One young athlete Zackery Lystedt who was 13 years old at the dealt with these effects. He suffered a concussionduring his junior high game but he felt his team needed him. he went back out to play and collapsed at the end of the game. “By that night, Zack was in a coma. it would be three months before he opened his eyes, and nine months before he could utter a word. Today, five years after his injury, Zack uses a wheelchair and needs round-the-clock-care,”(Tarshis 2). this shows the lasting effect repeating blows to the head can do to affect not just you but your family and friends. A kid who didnt really know how it would effect him and went in to go help his team because the awareness of knowing what a concussion was and how it could have affected him could have changed his life. One girl Becca Bobrow was seriously affected after four consecutive years with a concussion. “I still suffer lingering effects of my concussions. I can’t read small print. I am slow to learn new information. I sometimes have trouble finding the right words to speak,”(Tarshis 3). This shows how the effects of concussions are crazy and maybe if found out earlier or thinking about ending her soccer career earlier she would be able to live a much different life than she has to live today due to her limitations from her
