Essay On Community Walk

Great Essays
Come and take a walk with me down 21ST Northeast DC. Ward 5 in the District of Columbia. Here, you will see plenty of trash cans on the street, but plenty more trash on the ground. Also, you will see ripped couches, old dirty mattresses, abandoned bicycles that are disassembled, and drug paraphernalia. What you won’t see are white picket fences, flower gardens, or a suitable playground for kids to frequent. When I say unsuitable I mean the equipment is in deplorable condition, or completely broken, or the drug users and pushers are hanging out.
This area is predominantly occupied by Black residents with a few Hispanics, and I only saw two white people. I took this walk on 21st Street with a consumer I work with whom is a resident of

I felt angry at the adult population not providing the younger population with a better example, but then again we learn in the environment we grow up in. Part II: Structural …show more content…

In the global city of Washington, DC, gentrification related to affordable housing and social/racial tensions is becoming more and more prevalent. This, in turn, is affecting the future of the community and having adverse implications for the city’s old and new inhabitants. Gentrification is the practice of revitalizing or reforming a community to appeal to higher-class tastes, most often the tastes of the white middle-class. While gentrification is sometimes associated with increases in racial diversity and does not always lead to displacement, many researchers claim that it prices out long term-residents and brings about black-to-white racial change. Gentrifying neighborhoods typically experience reductions in the number of black residents;…

While walking in my field site, I found it strange that the streets were fairly empty. It was around 12pm and not too hot, but as I continued walking I noticed two police officers surveilling the area. As I kept walking to different blocks I noticed the same two police officers just driving slowly. The first officer was driving an SUV cop car and the second officer was driving a Ford Crown Victoria cop car. To me this did not seem as something important at first because it was my first time ever at this site, but as I continued to see dilapidated housing, housing with bars on the windows and iron gates surrounding the premises, abandoned houses or buildings, liquor/market stores primarily on every corner of the block, I realized that my site might be considered a low-income neighborhood.…

I carry with me the awareness that many don’t realize the true scope of: the situation in inner cities. During my four years at Habitat for Humanity in Newark, every time I volunteered there I saw the stark contrast of the environment and atmosphere compared to my comfortable suburban neighborhood. After watching the media and seeing what is usually represented, I realized that the situation in the inner cities cannot be fully realized until you experience it for yourself. Until you speak eye-level with the citizens and hear their stories, you won’t realize how bad some parts of our country really are, even though they are hardly fifteen, twenty miles from where you live. I think that it’s absurd that people who live so close to me live in…
