Essay On Community Health Issues

A social issue that greatly affects health is the ever expansion of poverty among minority based communities, such as South Los Angeles. The concentration of poverty creates many barriers to health for the people that inhabit these communities by cutting off their communication with community resources and supporters that could yield beneficial outcomes. Sadly, a loss in communication with external supporters of urban health makes it extremely difficult for those with limited resources (e.g., lack of information, low income) to obtain the healthcare they desperately need. Thereby, the ever expanding dilemma of poverty among minority communities affects not only those that are seeking to improve their health (often times those dealing with life threating diseases) but inadvertently affects entire families by forcing them to travel further to obtain the care they need - a luxury that these people often don’t have. While studies and major influencers in public health continue to provide evidence of rising health issues within these communities they are doing little about it. Their lack of information about issues, such as the social determinants of health, health prevention techniques, community health resources available, and healthy lifestyle models, forces these individuals to rely on word of mouth and their personal experiences to determine whether they are living a healthy lifestyle or need medical intervention. Often times, the misinformation that spreads from one person to another, similar to the community SCFHC caters to, leads these individuals to make risky health decisions, which often times results in poorer health
