Essay On College Athletes Should Get Paid

Improved Essays
One of the hottest topics in college Athletics for the past decade is whether or not college athletes should get paid. Big Schools are making an absolute fortune on these highly gifted kids through their exceptional play and social media charisma. Whether or not they should get paid is a bit of a stretch but I think with all of the money the schools are making off of these athletes I think they can manage giving the players a few dollars. Players should be paid for three reasons. Players miss so much class time with all the athletics that are going on but yet the NCAA continues to say that they provide a “free education”, secondly if players were paid the money they deserve they would get an early sense of financial awareness before going to the pros. Third and final reason is the NCAA acts as an employer but gives nothing back. College athletes have such busy schedules. For example star Forward for the Carolina Tar Heels Basketball team, Justin Jackson wakes up around 8am has weights at 830 and has practice from 9:30 to 11:30 and then eats lunch. He then has “classes” from 1-4 and then has practice again from 5 to around 7 and then has shoot around at 9. Justin Jackson is the ACC player of the year and …show more content…
They have always been enfactic about making sure that players keep their amateur status by not paying them. Due to the fact that kids nowadays bring in a healthy profit for their respected university but never see a penny of what they have rightfully earned. Since these athletes aren't being paid you see many of them declaring for the pros after only a year or two of college. 70% of them not lasting in the league for more than 4 or 5 years. If the NCAA would stop being so greedy and share some of the wealth then you would see more of the players staying in college. A Bi-product of this is that the players are able to fully develop into a pro athlete and leave college with a back up plan if things don't

Some may agree, and most of them make a compelling point as to why they shouldn’t. Some of these points are because the athletes get paid already in scholarships and specific aids. As Rebecca Zissou states in the article, “Fair Play: Should College Athletes Get Paid?” "Many top players receive tuition, books, tutoring, housing, meals, clothing, elite coaching, medical care, travel expenses, and career counseling. " What she fails to mention is that most of these things that the athletes receive only cover a small portion of the actual whole cost of living and learning, and being sheltered, and traveling; the list could go on.…

Because the NCAA is so lucrative, a rule was proposed to give each D1 football and basketball players a mere $150 a month to live on, for clothing and additional food (Goldman, Lee). Although it was not that much money, the rule was not accepted by the NCAA, showing how the NCAA is just using these students to make a profit. Even while making $1,000,000,000 from March Madness, from ticket sales and T.V rights, the NCAA still will not give the player who are earning this money any of it (Parker, Tim). With all this money coming in, the NCAA should be paying their athletes, but they refuse to even give them $150 a…

This is crazy because all these players get so many extra things provided to them already so why should they need to get paid. If they want to get paid they should work hard and make it to the pros. If the athletes that play college sports were to get paid those schools would lose a lot of money because it would be way too expensive to pay all of these athletes. You have to keep in mind that they already have to pay the coaches and teachers let alone athletes. From another aspect of looking at if college athletes should be paid or not is that it would take away how the players play the game.…

Most college athletes aren’t good enough to make it to the next level, so why should they be paid to play a sport that they have no future in? Besides, many athletes get scholarships for tuition, room and board, and textbooks. They aren 't actually given money, but getting those things free is a lot like being paid (Cambio 7). Most of their schooling is paid for by scholarships . They do not deserve to be paid to go to school to get an education to go make money at a job.…

College Athletes expect too much such as getting paid, but don’t actually focus on school. The athletes want money but if they were to get paid they wouldn’t show up to class and they would not know how to manage the money properly and not deal with the money in a childish type of way. The players want money but who is going to pay for everything else that they need to have? If they paid all of the athletes they would be paying a lot of money to all of those athletes.…

There are many reasons of which these student athletes should not be paid. These athletes do put their bodies on the line day in and day out which is a huge task to ask. They do it because they love the game they play and they want to get noticed. The point of college athletics is to hopefully move on to the next level of being a professional athlete. At that point, they will be paid a very large amount of money for playing the sport they love.…

With coaches making upwards of $7 million dollars a year and television ratings for its game coverage skyrocketing, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has had its fair share of good times in the 21st century. The association has also had its worst times as well, “the NCAA has never been more vulnerable and on the defensive with regards to it policies and practices, especially its reliance on the age-old characterization of college athletes as “amateurs” who are first and foremost “student-athletes” and the limits its members have collectively imposed on the remuneration these players receive” (Sanderson 115). Plain and simple, the NCAA does not want to dish out money to players to compensate for their play time. The NCAA views the athlete only as that amateur and not as an employee of the association.…

The first reason why student athletes should be paid is because scholarships that NCAA give to students don’t always cover full expenses (Christopher Davis Jr / Dylan Oliver Malagrino 2013). Universities promise students 4 year scholarships when NCAA only give 1 year scholarships and at any moment take the scholarship back if injuries happen or encounter takes place. Some scholarships cover the classes, books, and maybe dorms but leave out food, transportation or health coverage.…

Many people may or may not believe players are valuable enough to pay them. College players definitely do enough to get paid considering they are the reason most of the time that the team wins. Jared Walch went to the University of Utah and is a writer for USA Today and he writes how sometimes athletes deserve to be paid because of their contribution to their programs (Walch). Players choose to go to a school over other schools because they enjoy that school and want to see that team succeed not any other team, so they work hard to try and win games for their team. Jared Walch who is also a writer for the Daily Utah Chronicles writes on USA Today that performance does not guarantee a paycheck, so just because someone is good does not mean they should be paid big bucks (Walch).…

Unfortunately what critics lack to admit is that normal student’s face these same issues, being involved in on campus clubs and other ordeals those normal students face no one truly has a lot of time to get a job. Athletes have built in connections that non-athletes do not have, so being on an athletic team is by far more advantageous then simply being a student. So why should student athletes be the only students benefitting monetarily for their hard work (College Athletes). No one is enslaving nor, “forcing these athlete-students to play football. Don't hand me the garbage about it being their only opportunity in life.…

Although sports do make them lots of money, the colleges spend most of that money on the athlete’s scholarship, getting them each of them to places all over the country, paying for their nice uniforms and coaches, and building their stadiums. The athletes are still students, why should they get paid for doing a sport at college? Other students don’t get paid for getting good grades or winning some sort of award in a club. Playing a sport while your still in high school isn’t a job, it is a hobby. Professional sports player have warm up seasons and practice almost every day plus games.…

Yet schools do notdon’t have enough money to pay players? No, maybe the coaches should not be paid such a ridiculous amount. And the NCAA member colleges continue to vote to forbid the sharing of money with student athletes. So they hide behind a "veil of amateurism", so they call it, that keeps the wealth of college sports in the hands of a few administrators, athletic directors, and coaches. The "veil" makes sure athletic directors and coaches keep all the wealth and also ensures poverty for many of the athletes who provide their labor.…
