Essay On Clinical Social Work

The class discussions and readings in Clinical Social Work Practice one are linked with my internship at Cabrini Of Westchester. The classroom activities have been helpful to me because it helps me see in person what the professor is explaining to us. The class discussions have been very informative in describing different types of interactions we could encounter with our clients. Also, we have learned how to put ourselves in the client’s shoes, how to engage with clients, conflicts, listening skills, transference, and counter-transference and when a client is resistant. Playing the roles of the client or social worker has helped me understand how the social worker feels and how the client feels in certain situations. There have been situations when I noticed that the clients might not take me serious at first when I have to get information from them. The clients would mention that I am young, I would not know what they are feeling or able to help them because of my age, and I do not know how it feels to be in a nursing home. I explain to them that I understand where they are coming from, but because I am not their age, it does not mean I do not have the knowledge to better help their situation. At first I use to get frustrated, but after learning about positionality, I was able to better understand why some of the clients reacted or responded a certain way towards me. Maintaining a relationship is very significant when working with a client. Creating that safe house for the client allows them to open up more with the worker. As a social worker, I have to listen to the clients and find ways to make the client feel invited into the session. Some ways would be through activities, if the client were having difficulty opening up to me. I could probably find something that we have in common in order to start the
