Environment management. Controlling your classroom environment is an easy way to appeal to students and really does not take a whole lot of time. Plants are a good addition to any room as they add color and life to your classroom. Also, it gives students some sense of responsibility for the room when you have the students keeping the plants watered. I also like to keep trash cans around my room so that students don’t have to get up and interrupt the class to throw trash away. Another comforting addition to my classroom is a display of student work. The students create autobiographies at the beginning of the school year and I have them displayed on the wall. Classroom management and student behavior are directly correlated. If a teacher possesses good classroom management, then the student behavior is usually positive as well. Keeping a consistent and fair process for consequences to unacceptable behavior is just as important as positive consequences for desirable behavior. By the time students are in my class as eighth graders, they know what the school expectations are and it is my job to teach them my classroom expectations at the beginning of the school year and to remain consistent throughout the year. Students at this level should be able to control their own behavior and many times just giving the students a sharp look of disappointment will deter their negative actions. However, sometimes this is not the case and further consequences must be given. We have a set of consequences that are school-wide and we all have them posted in our classrooms, but it is up to the individual teacher to be sure that these actions are taken consistently. Once students realize that they are not going to get away with negative behavior, it usually produces a much more positive learning environment. The first activity that I currently use where I do not include technology is exit tickets. I currently require students to write their responses on an index card and I could, instead, have them answer the questions or write their response via google classroom private messaging. The second activity is stations around the room where students respond on a sheet of butcher paper. I could have the students use Padlet instead where they can see each other’s responses and I could post the question or prompt there. The third activity is answering questions on paper to see if they achieved mastery of the learning target. I could create a GoFormative quiz where students answer online and I can easily view the correct and incorrect answers for immediate feedback. A fourth activity is having students create visuals on construction paper of the terms. I could share a Google Slide presentation with them and have each one create a visual on different slides. This way students could use the presentation as a study tool and they will be able to access it. The final activity is having live debates in class. I could have the students purposely plan and use the rhetorical strategies and fallacious reasoning for a debate that is video taped. This way the students would have the opportunity to revise and edit before they turn it in. Integrating technology into classroom activities enables the teacher to see immediate results for

    I know that teachers are required to be observant of all facets of the classroom, have the ability to multitask, and keep students involved in the lesson. However, watching the video gave me a different perspective regarding effective discipline. For instance, watching the video made me realize that discipline and instruction work in unison; they are not separate entities. In fact, the video made me realize that discipline isn’t simply about controlling students’ misbehavior; rather it is truly about creating an environment that supports academic learning.
