The warriors of the Union were definitely prepared for the hardships of the Civil War. Let’s take a look at what they wore while they were off fighting for the freedom of slaves and the taming of the rebels. For undergarments, soldiers were issued one shirt, pair of socks, and drawers per year. If he lost any of these, he would have to pay to get another one. The shirt didn’t last very long so most men preferred to bring their own shirts. If men needed glasses, they brought their own from home since there was no eye doctors in battle. The popular style for facial hair is long sideburns, beard, and moustache. The foundation garments of a Union soldier’s uniform are wool trousers, ankle-high boots called “brogans”, a vest, suspenders or “braces”, and a stock. A haversack was used for carrying pretty much anything that could fit in it. A mucket could be used as a mug, bucket, cooking pot, bowl, and many more things. The cartridge box holds cartridges for the musket and the bayonet could be attached to the end of a musket if the enemy was too close to shoot. The Union soldiers were prepared for whatever came their way with their extremely useful uniform. This is one of the reasons the Union won the Civil War. If the Confederacy had with uniforms like this they may have stood more of a chance against the highly-skilled, highly-prepared Union
