If you had to describe the future of chiropractic in one word, what would it be? This question continuously rang through my head while listening to Dr. Kent’s philosophy presentation. As a future DC, its imperative to understand where the profession is headed and how its going to get there. The chiropractic profession is so diversified and often times this becomes their downfall. Subluxation vs. non subluxation, adjustment vs. spinal manipulation, prescriptive rights, innate intelligence, chiropractic physician….no wonder the public doesn’t understand chiropractic. The profession doesn’t even know what it is!

Another question that raises concern is whether chiropractors are a specialty provider or primary care provider? Better yet, what even is a primary care provider? DD Palmer wrote, “chiropractic is not a system of healing. Chiropractors do not treat disease; they do not manipulate the spinal column. Chiropractors adjust any or all of the 300 joints of the body, more particularly those of the spinal column.” Chiropractic IS a holistic approach to healing. A chiropractor is NOT a chiropractic physician. DD Palmer explains “the expression, a Chiropractic physician, or a physician Chiropractor, is the joining of two words of opposite meaning.” Adding “physician” to the title, establishing prescription rights, and seeking to expand our scope outside of expressing innate’s ability will only hurt the profession. We are different than MDs. We are different than PTs. We are different than DOs. If we continuously try to change our scope, we lose our uniqueness and relevance in the health care field.
