All the time horses are sent to live out the remainder of their lives in pastures because of an injury or lack of soundness. More often than not it is regretfully, when veterinarians and owners run out of ideas to try to make the horse better. One treatment option that often goes overlooked is chiropractic care. Because it can be more harmful then beneficial, if one does not know the proper methods, many owners choose not to attempt this treatment or only try it as a last resort. Even though it may seem to be a “scary” option, over the last century chiropractic care has become more popular and safer as technology and our understanding of horses has improved. According to horse-chiropractor.com chiropractic is defined as, “the practice of using one’s hands to diagnose, treat, and prevent diseases.” A chiropractic adjustment is, “a short lever, high velocity, controlled thrust by hand or instrument that is directed at specific articulations to correct vertebral subluxations” as stated by Equine Canine Spine. “History indicates that spinal manipulation was used on animals as far back as ancient China!” as reported by horse-chiropractor.com. Even though manipulations were used way back then it was not until 1895 that Daniel David (D.D.) Palmer introduced what we now know as Chiropractic Medicine as stated by palmer.edu. In 1895 he performed his first adjustments. One helped relieve a man of his deafness and another man of heart issues. Later in 1897 the Palmer School and Cure was founded and was later renamed Palmer School of Chiropractic located in Iowa (Palmer). As stated on Rolling Meadows Animal Hospital’s website he was presenting as early as 1905 Doctor of Veterinary Chiropractic certificates.
