The term “apache” came from the spanish, which means “enemy”. The Apache tribe was a nomadic group. They were considered as hunter-gatherers. They hunted and picked berries for food. Their main meat target was the mammoth. The mammoth was more than a food source. The Apache Indians used the skin for clothing to keep warmth during the summer. They also used the bones for weapons and crafts. However, the apache Indians didn’t eat fish or bears because they believed that the meat was unclean to eat. They ate berries and plants as extra. During the pregnancy, the woman is not allowed to do anything and is put on a strict diet to make sure the baby is healthy. The Apache Indians believe that certain foods can cause physical differences to the baby while in the mother’s womb. It could cause a big nose, birthmarks or even death. For the baby’s delivery, the women is taken to a separate tent to be used as a delivery room. The father of the bay or any male cannot see the childbirth but sometimes they are allowed to be in the delivery room. The woman can not give birth laying down, she has to give birth sitting down, kneeling, or standing. Since the families try to intervene as little as possible in the birth process, they would put a nest or pile of leaves right under the mother to catch the baby.
