I’m an extremely independent person so it wasn’t very hard for me to learn how to self-regulate. Even when I lived at home and went to high school, I didn’t have anyone telling me when to be up, when to do my homework, when to study, or when to get other various tasks done. It was easier for me to start cooking for myself and providing the things I need on a daily basis rather than depending on my parents to get these things for me. I’ve also been pretty good at managing my time and organizing things effectively. I have a dry-erase board on my wall that I use to write down all important deadlines and upcoming tests and finals. Seeing a visual schedule helps me know what to prioritize and work on first so I can spread my workload out. Last week I had an 8-10 research paper and a 5-6 research paper due on the same day. I finished both ahead of time because of my organizational and time management skills. I also have good internal motivation. I’ve always loved reading and writing; now I’m an English major. My goal is to get into the publishing world. English was my best subject in high school; it’s one of my strengths. As this chapter says, we are frequently underprepared when entering college. It would help to have a current college student explain to them how classes work here and how treating college like high school won’t succeed. If they are struggling to manage their time, I could teach them how to set up a schedule and organize their week or month. Resources we have here on campus to assist students academically include the math and writing center, the career center, and tutoring. The math and writing center can help students look at their papers and work on math issues, the career center can provide multiple functions such as looking at resumes, providing workshops to help build skills and learn about various career-related things, and providing a job fair, and tutoring helps students with the classes they are specifically struggling in. I can also lead them to these
