Everyday an American becomes victim to identity theft. Although there are multiple ways to illegally acquire personal information, it has become more popular to scam via social media. It may be the convenience of being able to perform scams from anywhere in the world or the ease of running multiple scams at once, but it is clear that today’s scammers have become very clever and creative at finding new ways to gain possession of personal information with the help of social media. From Catfishing, to phishing, to money flipping, scammers have evolved and are developing innovative ways to obtain information illegally.
Catfishing is “the practice of setting up a fictitious online profile, most often for the purpose of luring another (person) into a fraudulent romantic relationship” (Catfishing as a Form of Cyberbullying). In the 2010 documentary “Catfish”, we meet Yaniv “Nev” Schulman. (Catfish) Nev and his friend, Max, are on a journey to find Nev’s online girlfriend, Megan, as well as her little sister (Abby) and mother (Angela). His pursuit takes him to Ishpeming, Michigan, where he meets the mother, Angela, who was pretending to be Megan. As a spin-off of this documentary, MTV created “Catfish” the TV show.
