The Canadian identity is very unique and has been shaped by many different events. From 1914 to present day, the Canadian identity has been shaped into strong, loyal, accepting, independent and free country. The five most significant events that shaped Canada are: The Hundred Days battle, Statute of Westminster, D-Day’s Juno Beach battle, Official Language Act, and The Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The Hundred Day battle and D-day shows how strong and loyal Canada is, The Statute of Westminster and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms shows how independent and free Canada is, and the Official Language act shows how accepting and multi-cultural Canada is. On June 6th, 1944, the Allied forces were determined to end the four year war with Germany and invaded Western Europe during World War II. Canada was assigned to invade Juno Beach. The Allies sent in 150, 000 soldiers, 14,000 of them were Canadians with supplies. The task was to send in thousands of the Allies heaviest machinery to overrun the German forces so they could advance father into Germany. This was called Operation Overload. During the battle, The Canadian army faced many German soldiers who had strong forces and were prepared. At the end of the day, Canada successfully pushed back the German army and was the only country to meet their objective of removing German forces and cutting off German access points for supplies. Canada was thought to be an insignificant but was the only country to successfully meet their object. The Canadian accomplishments on D-day were remarkable and this advanced Canada’s sense of identity. A British historian, John Keegan said, “The opposition the Canadians faced was stronger than that of any other beach save Omaha. That was an accomplishment in which the whole nation could take considerable pride” (John Keegan, Page 7). Overall, the achievements accomplished during D-day will go down in Canadian history. Also, Canada once again surpassed expectations and accomplished greatness in this time of war and Canada’s reputation of a strong and reliable country
