What makes a leader? A leader can be anyone from the President of a country, to a kid in the schoolyard, telling kids what team they will be on during recess. The Camp Sebago mission is to emphasize to the campers that a leader is not someone who bosses others around, a leader is someone who serves his people and works for them, and helps them become better versions of themselves. A French novelist by the name of Andre Malraux made this very clear in one of his most famous quotes “To command is to serve, nothing more and nothing less.” At the time when he said this it may not have meant much, but to Camp Sebago it is everything that we strive to achieve. The counselor's job is to care for the campers needs and struggles if they arise. The mission of the camp is not just to teach the campers what this means, but also to show them how to live like this and lead by example. The quote can be interpreted in many different ways and even though it is not long but is concise and gets right to the point that “To command is to serve, nothing more and nothing less.” The second part where he says that there is nothing more and nothing left to say, means that what he said is the definition of a leader and that his definition is the correct definition and that there is no other way to put it. This is very cultural too, because a lot of French have strong opinions and can sometimes seem arrogant and this is exhibited in the quote. The mission of Sebago is very important to me and I think about it often. The motto “Dux Servit” affected me greatly when I was a camper as I looked up to the counselors as role models and leaders. I hope to teach campers what I have learned and pass on to them that a true leader is one who serves the
