Who? What? When? Why? How? These are the basic questions to ask yourself when you are trying to interpret or analyze a writing of essay. I have read three essays recently that I will analyze for you. Doing this I will help not only you understand the essay, but help myself dig further into the authors meaning. Essay number one is called “Two Ways to Belong in America” written by Bharati Mukherjee. Essay number two is called “Buying a House” written by Sean Prentiss. Last but not least essay three is called “The Company Man” written by Ellen Goodman. Now come along with me in this journey to delve deeper into the authors’ main argument. In the end we’ll figure out that they are more alike than you might think. When you write an essay what type …show more content…
I’ll be honest, this audience was harder for me to figure out than the last one because of its generality in the beginning. But I think after reading the essay that the audience Goodman is intending for is people who work way too much and inform them about the reality of what can happen when they put work before family. Personally I think that when someone works so much that they spend minimal time with the family they are throwing their lives away for an extra couple of bucks. And spending time with your wife and kids is worth a whole lot more than a couple of bucks in my thinking. This setting influences the audience by explaining the saddening reality of what can become of you and your family when you invest way too much time into your office. Like Goodman describes in this sentence, “The boy once said, ‘my father and I just board here.’” (452) when you work too much you can rub your bad habits onto your offspring. That last quote came after a part in the essay in which Goodman tells about how the boy just does enough work to get money for food. And nothing else. In that sentence the boy implies that he spends so much time on other things that he only comes home to sleep there and then goes back out every day etc. That’s my guess at

All of these authors have their very own perspectives on what America has to offer. This so-called “land of new beginnings” doesn’t always have the best options for foreigners. As Mukherjee says in “Two Ways to Belong in America”, “The price that the immigrant willingly pays, and that the exile avoids, is the trauma of self-transformation.” He believes that immigrants, although successful at the beginning, change as their lives take off in this new place. They are treated unequally and struggle to fit in.…

The “culture of poverty” mindset creates a distances between the impoverished and the wealthy. Ehrenreich provides the term “culture of poverty” as exemplified in Michael Harrington's The Other America. This work is the foundation in which Ehrenreich reveals the reality of poverty and the misconceptions of the term. There is the idea that “The poor were different from the rest of us, it argued, radically different, and not just in the sense that they were deprived, disadvantaged, poorly housed, or poorly fed.”(607) This idea promotes that if adults with different economic backgrounds are totally different why would their children differ.…

The two essays I chose to compare and contrast are Sam Walton/Jay Z and Serving in Florida. The purpose of the authors is to inform the audience about how the character of these to essays Sam Walton/Jay Z and Serving in Florida succeed staring from nothing and their evolution throughout their life, in a legal or illegal way of obtaining money. In the story of Sam Walton, he started from nothing and kept growing due of his ambition of progressing, he was a very cheap man, didn’t care much about fancy stuff. I think it’s very interesting how he manages his life style, humble and hard worker, always thinking with a big picture for his and his family future. Which is very similar to Barbara in the Serving America story.…

Author Chuck Palahniuk has said, “The truth is, immigrants tend to be more American than the people born here.” While this statement may bare truth for some, many other immigrants face difficulties when identifying his or her culture. Within the novel, The Book of Unknown Americans, by author Cristina Henriquez, several of the story’s narrators prove to be evident of this clash of cultures and loss of identity. Specifically, Mayor Toro, a teenager raised in America, with immigrant parents from Panama. Because of his parents’ native background, Mayor suffers an identity crisis, to which he fails to see himself as either an American or a Panamanian.…

At times, society associates poverty and homelessness with people unwilling to work or prosper. Bulosan’s short story shares this idea of no choice with a political cartoon known as “What Will He Do,” which depicts President McKinley deciding whether or not to keep the Philippines or “send them to Spain” while the globe watches for his decision. Through the visual of President McKinley making a decision for the Philippines, the political cartoon “What Will He Do,” argues the Philippines are deprived of choice. “Be American” mirrors this argument by linking the Consorcio and his cousin to the idea of lack of choice.…
